The Power of Your Birthstone
Birthstones and their associated energies have become increasingly popular in modern culture. Although they now adorn Pandora necklaces and be found in jewelry on any high street, the twelve birthstones have an ancient history that can be traced back to the Holy Bible. In the Book of Exodus, it describes an armored breastplate worn by the priest of the Israelites, Aaron. With twelve different coloured gemstones appearing on the breastplate to represent the twelve Israelite tribes. These gemstones were thought to have spiritual powers and astrologers throughout the ages have attributed certain powers and characteristics to specific stones. Back then, the gems were named due to their colour rather than their physical properties and chemical composition, and so may not be a true representation for the contemporary twelve birthstones. Interestingly, in 16th century Poland the upper class would wear each stone according to the corresponding month rather than just wearing the one stone associated with their star sign and month of birth.
January – Garnet
The Garnet is a beautiful red stone that represents purity, honesty, faith, and trust. Those born in January experience the Garnet's spiritual powers that are known for shielding travelers and keeping them safe. The word ‘Garnet’ comes from a term for the word ‘seed’ as the stone is a deep red colour much like a fruit seed.
February – Amethyst
‘Amethyst’ comes from the Greek word ‘amethystos’ meaning ‘sober’ as the ancient Greeks would use the stone to ward off the effects of alcohol and guard them against intoxication. The Amethyst birthstone has spiritual powers that protect the mind and help to overcome depression, anxiety, and stress. For this reason, Amethyst is widely used to help with sleep. It is a water element stone linked to Pisces and Aquarius.
March – Aquamarine
Another water stone, Aquamarine was originally used by sailors who used the stones, embezzled with an inscription of the Greek god of the sea Poseidon, to protect them against the dangers of the ocean. Aquamarine’s spiritual powers include helping cure ailments relating to the stomach, liver, and heart (sailors used to drink water that Aquamarine had been sitting in to cure illnesses), as well as promoting communication.

Diamonds are fire and air element stones with strong links to the sun. Diamonds are clearly symbols of a higher love but also represent courage and strength. In Sanskrit ‘diamond’ is called ‘vajra’, also meaning lightening, Zeus’ weapon of choice, as well as Indra’s who was the king of the gods in Hindu mythology. Diamond’s spiritual powers as a birthstone include increased fertility as well as aiding in reproduction.
May – Emerald
Forming in a variety of rich green tones, Emerald is a water stone and represents lifeforce. Emerald’s birthstone powers aid in the development of any area of your life from increasing wealth to aiding in your love life. Interestingly, the Romans dedicated the Emerald stone to the goddess of beauty and love, Venus.

July- Ruby
Rubies have a long-standing reputation as being incredibly valuable thanks to the Hindu religion as they regarded Rubies as the king of gems.
